Devils Lake wrapped up its track and field indoor season with a solid showing at the EDC Indoor Meet in Grand Forks this past Saturday.
The Firebirds girls placed fifth out of 10 teams with 54.6 team points. The boys came in ninth out of 11 with 16 points. The team’s Facebook page noted how the girls’ score was roughly double what it’s been for the last 15-18 years.
Fargo Davies was the winner for both the boys and the girls.
The girls’ 4×800 relay group finished second with a time of 10:32.98 — Devils Lake’s fastest time since 2006. The quartet is made up of Aubrie Lebrun, Tenley Triepke, Riley Schmiess and Dottie Goss.
Sophomore Sara Kraft also had another strong day. She set an indoor school record for the 60-meter hurdles with a score of 9.66. That put her in fourth place out of 35 finishers. Freshman Ella Wass placed eighth in the same event.
Kraft also came in second in the triple jump, along with fourth in the long jump. Wass placed third in the 300-meter hurdles.
In last year’s outdoor season, Kraft made it to state in four different events.
The 4×400 relay team of Goss, Lebrun, Triepke and Wass came in third place. The 4×200 relay also had a good showing, running the school’s fastest time since 2006 at 1:52.91. The group, which came in fifth, was made up of Kraft, Wass, Ealynn Yoder and Raeleigh Myklebust.
Schmiess, an eighth-grader, placed third in the 3200-meter dash, while Lebrun, a junior, placed fifth in the 400-meter.
The Devils Lake girls totaled 19 personal records on the day.
With the indoor season complete, Kraft led the team with 41.75 points. Wass was second on the team with 20, while Goss was third with 17.25.
On the boys’ side, senior Adam Sobolik came in fourth in the 400-meter. Seniors Oliver Wirth and Joel Nelson made their first track and field appearances of the season, coming in third and sixth, respectively, in the high jump. Both of them made it to state in the outdoor high jump last year. Senior Grant Quam tied for ninth in the high jump on Saturday, with 24 total places.
Now, after three indoor meets, the Devils Lake track and field team begins its outdoor season. The first one is scheduled for this Friday in the Sheyenne Invitational at Sheyenne High School. The first event is at 12:30 p.m.
